Healthy aging is my avocation.
I have always valued feeling healthy. I was self-taught on exercise techniques and proper nutrition until recently, when I decided to get certified as a personal trainer so that I could share my passion with others.
A healthy lifestyle has been shown to decrease stress levels, strengthen your immune system and ward off depression.
Should you throw in the towel when you reach 50?
Not so fast… Healthy lifestyle choices improve your mind and body regardless of your age. If you know what to expect as you age, then you can make informed decisions designed for your lifestyle.
For me, that means
- Going to the gym every single day, even on vacation, and doing a regimen of cardio machines, spin classes and resistance training.
- I’ve abandoned my strict vegetarian ways; however, I eat a nutritious diet consisting of lots of fruits and vegetables, chicken and fish.
- My biggest vice is coffee. So I was thrilled to read the findings of a recent study that 4-5 cups of caffeinated brewed coffee per day is associated with a decreased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
- My trick for getting through those 10-hour days practicing law? Going to the gym or going for a run on a regular basis. I figured my body deserved some much-needed attention after the constant onslaught of brain exercise.
